Victims’ Families Group Claims ‘Confiscation of Believers’ Assets,’ Files Complaint with Prosecution

The leader of the World Mission Society Church of God, Jang Gil-ja, and General Pastor Kim Joo-cheol have been accused of conducting fraudulent activities using conditional end-time doctrine.

The Victims’ Families Group of the World Mission Society Church of God (Co-representatives: Kim Yong-hwan, et al.) held a press conference in front of the Pangyo World Mission Society Church of God on July 27, stating, “Jang Gil-ja and Kim Joo-cheol preached conditional end-times for the purpose of accumulating wealth and confiscated believers’ assets.” After the press conference, the fraud victims submitted a formal complaint to the Seoul Supreme Prosecutor’s Office.

The World Mission Society Church of God is commonly known as Ahnsahnghong Witnesses. It was founded in 1964 by Ahnsahnghong, but after his death in 1985, Jang Gil-ja was deified as “God.” Kim Joo-cheol, Jang’s nephew-in-law, rose to the position of General Pastor, establishing the group as a leading Korean heretical sect.

The Victims’ Families Group (hereafter referred to as Hapimo) explained that the church’s rapid rise was due to its exploitation of conditional end-time doctrine to confiscate believers’ assets. Hapimo revealed that Jang Gil-ja and Kim Joo-cheol preached conditional end-times three times: in 1988, 1999, and 2012. By claiming that material possessions would be meaningless when the end comes, they pressured followers to “store their treasures in heaven” and glorify God to be counted among the 144,000 who will enter heaven, thereby forcing them to make monetary contributions.

When the prophesied end did not come in 1988 and 1999, they suppressed believers’ doubts by asserting that the world would “definitely end by 2012.” Even when the end did not arrive in 2012, they created a new doctrine called “Completion Inspection” to delay the timing of the end while continuing to demand offerings.

Hapimo stated, “Jang Gil-ja and Kim Joo-cheol, who had confidently proclaimed the world would end in 2012, purchased 90 worship buildings worth around 700 billion KRW from 2012 to 2016. Some of these buildings are valued at over 30 billion KRW. Since they clearly did not believe in their own 2012 prophecy, these purchases confirm that their conditional end-time doctrine was a fraudulent scheme to confiscate followers’ assets.” As a result of these tactics, according to an appeals court ruling (2015Na2032729), the financial size of the World Mission Society Church of God is estimated to be 3–4 trillion KRW.

The fraudulent schemes of Jang Gil-ja and Kim Joo-cheol extend beyond Korea to the United States, China, Singapore, Mongolia, and other countries. Hapimo explained that the church sends followers abroad as missionaries, causing issues locally and tarnishing Korea’s international reputation.

Hapimo emphasized, “To hold Jang Gil-ja and Kim Joo-cheol accountable for their illegal and anti-social actions, including confiscating believers’ assets and destroying families, we have submitted a formal complaint to bring them before the court of law.”
